What are the effective treatment options available for hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating problem is a realistic problem that is often quite embarrassing. It is most often caused in the underarms area but in some severe cases it can also take place in palms of hands, sole of feet, face or at any other area of the body.

So if you are encountering the problem of hyperhidrosis and you are hiding yourself under the bulky sweaters or planning to move to a colder climate, here are some practical and proven treatments which can prevent the heavy sweating problem.

There are different hyperhidrosis treatment options available which can be used to fight against the excessive sweating issue.
  • Use of anti-perspirants: this is the easiest and the cost effective way to counter the problem of excessive sweating. At initial step, you can try out using anti-perspirants to control sweating. Aluminium salts are the major ingredients of anti-perspirants. When they are applied to the skin, anti-perspirants form a kind of covering that act as hindrance by blocking the perspiration.
There are lots of different brands of anti-perspirants available in the market. You can start off with buying any one of those which suits your skin. They are milder than the prescription anti-perspirants.  If they don’t work for your problem then you can consult the doctor or dermatologist about the issue.
  • Botox Hyperhidrosis treatment: After trying out antiperspirants and consulting the doctor, you can choose botox treatment for hyperhidrosis. In the botox hyperhidrosis treatment, FDA approved Botulinum Toxin A is used for botox injections.
Botox is injected into underarms area by using the fine needles. The botox reacts as an agent which prevents the chemical release from the sweat glands by blocking the signals that activate the glands.
Botox hyperhidrosis treatment is highly effective and gives immediate results. There are no potential harmful effects of the treatment. Depending on the extent and area of your excessive sweating problem, you might require having several injections of Botox in numerous sessions. It has no down time.

The treatment might cause swelling and mild bruising in the treated area but it vanishes within few days. The results of botox for hyperhidrosis treatment are not permanent.
  • Iontophoresis : this treatment involves the use of electrical current. The patient needs to place his hands or feet or might be both in the shallow water tray through which a mild electrical current is passed for almost 20-30 minutes.
This treatment needs to be repeated several times in a week after which the sweat glands might stop perspiring.  Generally this is a safe treatment if it is administered by expert professional who knows how to control the intensity of electric current.
  • Surgery: This solution to the problem of hyperhidrosis should be taken only when all other non-invasive hyperhidrosis treatment options fails to produce results. It is recommended only for those who have severe problem of hyperhidrosis and they failed to respond to other treatment options. In the surgical procedures, doctors generally damage, scrap, or remove the sweat glands. It is obviously painful procedure with longer recovery period as compared to other non-surgical hyperhidrosis treatments.
